A Contract-to-Hire offer often comes with two timelines: the contract you can accept now and a possible permanent role later. Those are not the same commitment. Before deciding, get clear on the arrangement you are actually entering—not only the job you hope it may become.
Start With The Employment Terms
Ask which organization will employ and pay you during the contract period, and whether the role is W-2 employment or another arrangement. Confirm the hourly rate or salary, expected hours, benefits eligibility, work location, and who handles time approval. The answers can vary by employer and contract, so do not assume that the label C2H settles them.
Make Conversion Specific
Ask when the conversion decision is expected and what the employer will consider: project delivery, technical skills, team fit, or a defined combination. Find out whether the permanent role has an approved compensation range and what benefits would begin after conversion. A target date or stated intention is not a guarantee, so assess whether the contract terms work for you on their own.
Plan For Either Outcome
Before signing, clarify what happens if the project ends early, the conversion is delayed, or either party decides not to proceed. Review notice expectations and any restrictions or repayment terms in the documents, and ask for unfamiliar language to be explained before you agree. A useful C2H conversation leaves you understanding both the opportunity and the limits of the promise.
